A proper secretion of acid in the stomach is a critical factor for digestion and absorption. Stomach acid, also known as hydrochloric acid, breaks up protein into individual amino acids. Our body then uses these amino acids to build and repair all internal protein structures, including muscle, hair, fingernails, and various parts of the body. Amino acids are also precursors of mood and emotional regulating substances, called neurotransmitters. Hydrochloric acid is also responsible for separating out minerals and other molecules from food in which they're found. Calcium, iron, and most of the other essential minerals found in food don't assimilate well when there's not enough stomach acid being produced. Overall, there are between 15 and 25 essential nutrients potentially under-digested by individuals with under secretion of hydrochloric acid. The Heidelberg HCl test measures the acidity of the stomach, using a high tech pH capsule. Once low acid secretion is found, the individual is prescribed hydrochloric acid supplements (Betaine HCl) to improve their conditions.
